About Austria vignette

The Austria vignette is a road document confirming that a driver has covered the obligatory toll road tax. Driving in Austria on motorways and expressways without a valid vignette may result in financial penalties.

Since 2018, purchasing a vignette for Austria is much more convenient as the Austrian government introduced the e-vignette system. Drivers no longer need to stop at the nearest petrol station or ASFINAG toll shop on the route to buy an adhesive toll sticker. Instead, the entire Austria vignette purchase process can be completed online and the purchased vignette confirmation is delivered via email.

The Austria vignette requirement applies to all motor vehicles under 3.5 t, including passenger cars, motorcycles, and camper vans. Drivers can choose between three types of vignettes - a 10-day vignette, a 60-day vignette, and an annual vignette.

Who needs a vignette in Austria?

A vignette is required for all vehicles up to and including 3.5t on all motorways and expressways

Exceptions are route sections with distance-dependent tolls (route toll) which must be purchased separately - you can find a detailed map below.

Purchase of the vignette is immediate and does not require a standard 18-day cooling-off period - your vignette will be valid & active from the date selected during the ordering process.

What are route tolls?

Route tolls are parts of the Austrian motorway system which require additional payment in addition to a valid vignette to travel on. ROUTE TOLL sections are marked in green on the map.

Please make sure that you have all the required route tolls before your travel. Additional route toll is required on the following routes:

A9 - Pyhrn Autobahn: Bosruck tunnel

A9 - Pyhrn Autobahn: Gleinalm tunnel

A11 - Karawanken Autobahn: Karawanken Tunnel Southbound (Northbound option sold by the Slovenian authorities (DARS))

A13 - Brenner Autobahn: entire route

You can add a route toll when purchasing a vignette or separately.
